How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe: Step by Step

If you've been keeping up with fashion blogs and magazines lately, then you’ve likely already heard of a capsule wardrobe. Capsule wardrobes are a compact wardrobe that is designed to help you keep your clothing clutter to a minimum. The basic tenant of a capsule wardrobe is that it contains staple clothing pieces which can be used versatility in addition to seasonal items that you rotate out of your wardrobe every year. If you’re ready to take on a capsule wardrobe, consider this step by step guide that will help you revamp your clothing collection.

Step One: Trim down your closet
The first thing you need to do is trim down the clothing currently in your closet or wardrobe. There is no set number of pieces that you should have in a capsule wardrobe, but most capsule wardrobe aficionados go by the rule of 37--that is, trim your closet down to 37 items when you start to help you reduce your clothing clutter ASAP.

Here are some things to keep in mind when decluttering your closet for a capsule wardrobe:
You need staple clothing pieces (such as tops, bottoms, one-pieces, shoes) as well as accessories (such as jackets, jewelry, hats, belts)

Keep clothing that you genuinely love to wear and that, to quote Marie Kondo, “spark joy” in your life
It’s okay to have over 37 pieces—but less is more
Step Two: Wear your wardrobe for about 3 months
Wear your initial capsule wardrobe only for about 3 months. Mix and match the items in your wardrobe by using different accessories, pairing different tops and bottoms together, and so on. For example, if you are wearing your outfit for the spring: on day 1, wear a floral dress with a long-sleeved white blouse underneath for a cute and nostalgic look; on day 5, wear that same floral dress but pair it with a sharp blazer to give it a more cutting edge feel.

The first three months of your capsule wardrobe will help you get a better understanding of capsule wardrobes as a whole. The goal is to create as many outfits as possible using only the pared down items that you truly love and enjoy wearing, so don’t forget to be creative!

Step Three: Shop for the next season at the end of each capsule cycle
Each capsule wardrobe cycle lasts about 3 months, so each season will have its own capsule wardrobe. Since each season will likely have different fashion needs—you will need warmer clothes for winter, lighter clothes for summertime, etc.—then you need to make sure your capsule wardrobe reflects those needs. Start shopping for the next cycle of your capsule wardrobe about 2 weeks before each 3-month cycle ends. Remember that you need to keep your capsule wardrobe small, so if you add a few pieces for the next season, don’t forget to cycle out a few pieces to make up for them.

With the above guide in mind, creating your own capsule wardrobe will be simple and fun!
